Glorious Mistakes
The other day I was lucky enough to come across this video of a commencement speech given by author Neil Gaiman.
I love how he does not claim to have all the answers. He can tell us how he came to be a published author and how he approaches the job of writing. But, he doesn’t pretend to be able to give us the proper steps to achieving this for ourselves.
His best advice is to make glorious mistakes. Really go all out and allow yourself to mess things up a bit. That is how you make the interesting discoveries. That is how you find your way. And each person’s path is unique. What works for him, may not work for me. And what brings me to my goals may prove a total disaster for someone else.
Run your own race.
And above all else, make good art. 🙂
