finding magic along the way

When Art Calls Your Name

I have started to pay more attention to creativity in all its various forms. Things which in the past I would have thought were merely neat, I am starting to see as various forms of artistic expression.

I am a person who has trouble making a good stick figure, so visual arts have always been slightly out of reach for me. Then I found quilting.

I still can not seem to refer to myself as a textile artist as some advanced quilters do. I just love to piece fabric and sew the bits together. I find a special kind of therapy in losing myself in the aisles of bolts in the local fabric shops. But I never called it art before.

Lately, though, I am seeing art everywhere. In paintings and photographs, of course, but also in odd places.

For example, I found this on Facebook, shared by Stylish Eve.

I am amazed by this. If you google “Latte Art” you will find hundreds of pictures like this. They are almost too pretty to drink! ๐Ÿ™‚

Another picture on Facebook introduced me to banana art.

This was posted by memecenter.com. I would never have thought to use bananas as a medium to express my artistic side. But really, this takes quite a bit of talent and fast carving. Again, google “banana art” and you will be amazed at what people are doing with this simple fruit. ๐Ÿ™‚

How about cakes, and other baked goods?

This came from the Facebook page of “Anyone can be cool, but awesome takes practice.” It has ruined me for plain old sheet cake for life! I have always had a soft spot for piglets!

Or how about this for all the book lovers out here?

This one was posted by Random House on Facebook – Literary cakes! Love them!! ๐Ÿ™‚

Perhaps the coolest thing I have come across recently on Facebook that demonstrates to me that art is truly everywhere is the following video. Since I don’t have video privileges here on Catching Fireflies, please click on theย colored link to check out this short YouTube video! You will not regret it. ๐Ÿ™‚

Where have you been finding art in your life? Do you think art should only be reserved for those of us following the traditional artistic paths? Or do you think that these creative outlets add color to the world around us?

  1. I think art is every where…and quilts are most definitely works of art. I have a pin board on pinterest that consists of what I call fabric art…quilts, stitchery, etc…

    • I love the classic quilt patterns more than some of the crazy quilts that are so popular now. Definitely an addicting hobby!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Love the quilt, Cheryl. I find working with my hands puts my mind at peace. My brother is the true artist. I am a crafter and I love it … even use some of it in my on-line shop at Etsy. You should be proud. It takes exacting skills and a great eye to be a quilter. I am a bit scatter-brained and stick to things like decoupage … since I love to make a happy mess ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Decoupage is a wonderful form of expression! I tried it on some clay pots for flowers and really liked the results! ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Wow! Latte art? Really?

    *goes off to Google*

    Xx

    • Vikki – I was amazed what people can do with the foam on a cup of coffee! Be sure to check out the video too – spun sugar as art. ๐Ÿ™‚
