Catching Fireflies

finding magic along the way

How Busy am I?

I am busier than a one-armed paper hanger in a windstorm…

Busier than a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs…

Busier than a mosquito in a nudist colony…

Busier than a cross-eyed air-traffic controller…

Busier than a one-toothed man in a corn-on-the-cob eating contest…

You get the picture.

I truly wanted to participate in NaNoWriMo this year. I missed it last year because of my certification class, and I am even more swamped this year.

I just finished my certification class and board exam and am working with my editor on rewrites. I am trying to learn everything there is to know about ISBNs, copyright, marketing, formatting and so on, and hoping to get my first book out the door by mid-February.

And while there is still a crazy part of me that wants to say, oh what the hell, what’s one more thing on the plate? I just don’t think I could do the prepublishing work justice, not to mention the NaNo novel, if I pile anything else on my to-do list.

I will tell anyone who is on the fence that skipping NaNo is hard. Once you get a taste of that wild adrenaline rush of spewing out 50,000 words in 30 days, knowing that hundreds of thousands of people are doing the same thing at the same time… Well, you just can’t replicate it.

At the same time, I think it’s important for us to allow ourselves a little breathing room. NaNo is a hoot and I love it, but if there is barely enough time to squeeze in some sleep in a given day, adding a daily word count to your list may not be the answer.

We have to forgive ourselves sometimes for only having 24 hours in a day, 7 days in a week. Those are the rules, and while we didn’t make them, we have to abide by them.

NaNo will be there next November, I promise. And if you can’t wait that long, there is always Camp NaNo! 🙂

    Busy lady. VERY busy lady.

    • I am finally beginning to understand what they mean when they say, if you want something done ask a busy person to do it.

  2. I just love all the different hilarious ways you found to describe how busy you are…and the mosquito one is the winner for me! With the cross eyes=d air traffic controller coming a close second:-) I’ve actually never done NaNo before but you know what…this year I just might! It seems it could be possible for me to make time for it, so, well, let’s see, but you may have just inspired me and sure – it’ll be there next year too:-) Take care, and don’t forget to sleep! Hugs, Harula xxx

    • My dad always uses the one armed paper hanger which is what got me thinking of the others. 😊 every other day I tell myself I can squeeze in NaNo… May do a version of it and try to put one blog post a day in the queue.
