Catching Fireflies

finding magic along the way

Another Year, Another Kick In The Butt

dreams22

I think as we age, we tend to fall into one of two categories. We either continue to be wild, live-by-the-seat-of-your-pants, take-crazy-chances kind of people, or we are like the rest of us. As we get older, we take fewer chances. We realize that there is a cost to everything and we balance the pros and cons before taking the plunge.

This can happen in any area of our lives. If you are looking for a new job, you tend to weigh the costs and benefits of each position. Some things you can live with; some things you can’t. You realize no job is going to be perfect. So, you decide what are your absolute must-haves and you go there. The same holds true for buying a new house.

Breaking up with someone or going out with someone new – same thing. Are looks most important? Or are you more focused on a sense of humor? Are you looking for someone to spend the rest of your life with? Or are you just looking for an occasional date? Are there things about a person that you can live with or are there things you absolutely won’t tolerate? You have to draw your lines in the sand.

As far as our dreams are concerned, I think a lot of us base decisions on age. Maybe not consciously, but it does play a role. Sometimes, we are concerned that we will look silly because people will think we are too old to try something new. Other times, we will think we are not old enough, haven’t had enough experience to succeed at a new venture.

And still other times, we will feel the pull of the adventure, a siren song, and a small voice in our head and heart will say, do it now before it is too late.

A friend of mine heard that siren song last month just before she turned 50. She spent some months downsizing everything she owned to fit into a car, dehydrated a lot of food, and picked her day. Then she headed south with no job, no home, no tribe waiting for her. She will be camping in various national forests along the way. She was scared, and thrilled, and excited.

Many of us, hearing about her dream, may have said that’s crazy! No job lined up? No real destination? What will you do? But I think deep down a quiet voice inside us yelled – you go, girl! We were secretly jealous of her courage and her new adventure.

We may not have been dreaming of the same adventure. We may not like camping; we may like 5 star hotels and gourmet restaurants instead of dehydrated fruit and a sleeping bag. But the start of a dream – that is what grabbed hold of our jealous streak and made us think.

Untitled-1

What would you do if you could just throw caution to the wind and finally go for it?

Some of us are approaching our dreams a little more slowly instead of jumping in all at once feet first. Some of us haven’t left our day job as we pursue other goals. Some of us never will. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t embark on our very own adventure.

How old do you have to be before you finally decide it is now or never?

I have a secret for you — It is now, whatever your age; it is right now.

Cheryl I love, love, LOVE the page you have started…
You words are put on paper with such enthusiasm and creativity…
    It’s from your soul …
You are such an inspiration to me and my journey…
For all of you who don’t know, I am the 50 year old women Cheryl writes about…
Cheryl your positive words keep me going…
The next part of my journey is about to begin…
How appropriate that on Saturday as the earths atmosphere filters out the blue and green light to make room for the blood moon, I will be filtering out many things in my life to make room for positive growth…
    Changing my destiny…
A cycle in my life will be concluding…
Clearing out negative energy making room for the next chapter in my life…
Stimulating, awakening more freedom for creativity and a more rounded, grounded spiritual life…
Growth within, trusting my heart, perceptible by the mind’s eye visualizing promise for my future…
Moving forward, gently, peacefully, cherishing each moment of my journey…
    Letting go of harried…
    Striving for balance…
No longer allowing someone to hold my happiness in their hands…
    Letting go of the rope…

I have finally found a place to call home…
Nestled in the mountains of Western North Carolina, hoping to let go of some of my suburbanite characteristics and live in a minimalist existence…
I turn the page to the next chapter of my life…
Letting go of the hustle and bustle, the noise, the craziness, the pressures…
For some it will seem as if I’m living a poor, destitute life…
For me, I feel as if I’m living “high on the hog”…
Richly abundant , it’s the wealthiest I have ever lived…

Thank you Cheryl for being a part of my journey…
    Keep writing my friend…
